"Dear Kitchen Saints"

In 2000, Nancy Campbell of "Above Rubies Magazine" published an anonymous marriage testimony.  The writer included an email address.

   I contacted this anonymous writer, wanting to thank her for her courage and bravery in sharing her story with so many wives. I knew it would be an incredible encouragement to them.  She emailed me back, saying she knew who I was! I was stunned.  It turned out that we had both been writing for Crowned with Silver and Sarah's Promise magazines!  I had loved her articles in those publications and was amazed to read her testimony. 

Her name is Connie Hultquist.  For 13 years, she has been writing almost daily to a group of homemakers, encouraging them, building up their faith, and helping to strengthen Christian homes all over the world.

Recently, Nancy Campbell reprinted Connie's marriage testimony, in the February 2013 edition of "Above Rubies."  This time, she included her name.  There was also an update.   Connie, married almost 40 years, was now widowed.    Her testimony went out to 100 countries and many have written seeking her advice and encouragement. 

In light of this response, Connie and I worked together to come out with a book.  It was just released today!  It is called, "Dear Kitchen Saints:  Letters from an Iowa Housewife."    This book is much needed in today's Christian homes. 

Wives of this generation have it harder than ever.  They desperately need old time wisdom and encouragement.

Provident Films Presents - Ring the Bell DVD - Giveaway

Rating - PG - For "Mild Thematic Elements."

Running Time - 96 minutes

This wholesome, family-friendly movie is about a wealthy executive from the city, who heads to a small town.  He flashes his money, trying to sign a star, high school, ball player to his sports agency.  He is met with integrity, kindness, and a steadfast resistance to his way of life.

He spends some time at a boy's ranch, which is an orphanage and is run by two amazing young people.  Viewers are taken along with him to experience what life is like for those who are devoted to the Lord and His ways. 

A few brief meetings with the town's pastor (played by Steven Curtis Chapman), is a blessing to watch.

We are also treated to an excellent town concert with the real Casting Crowns, who share an inspiring message.

The meaning of "ringing the bell," is absolutely precious! 

Overall, this is an amazing movie and a surprising delight.  It is something to watch more than once, and share with others.

The Laundry Giveaway

One of my favorite recipes in this book is on page 204. It is for "Never-Fail Pie Crust" and makes 12 single crusts!  It looks easy to follow and is carefully explained.  I can just imagine making homemade chicken pot pies, apple pies and lemon meringue pies with this recipe.

The Woodcarver DVD - Giveaway

Movie - The Woodcarver (Restoring Their Faith in God and in Life).

From - Faith and Family Films.

Rating - PG

Running Time - 90 Minutes.

A young rebellious teenager vandalizes the outside of a church in his community. He is acting out because of pain from his family.  He is required to make restitution by repairing the damage he caused.

One would think this teen is the main character and that the plot revolves around him, but the woodcarver is the real star, with a powerful message.  The teen begins to work with him, which infuriates his backslidden father.  The boys' parents are in the midst of a divorce and home -life has fallen apart. We also vividly see the destruction which can come from focusing heavily on seeking money at the expense of family.

This movie shows tremendous grace to the sinner. It shows the power of patience and the beauty of a life-long marriage. The example and advice from the woodcarver speaks volumes.

Raising Real Men book and Hero Tales Audio CDs - Giveaway

The Book - Raising Real Men: Surviving, Teaching and Appreciating Boys (Retail value $15.)

This incredible book was written by Hal and Melanie Young, parents of six boys and two girls. They are a much loved family in the homeschool community and have excellent advice for parents. This book is 250 pages and in paperback.  I did a review for this book in 2009 and loved it!

The Audio Cd's- (Retail value $7 for each one.)

Hal Young Reads Hero Tales, which was written by Henry Cabot Lodge and Theodore Roosevelt. There are two Cd's in this set - Part 1 and Part 2.

Hal does an incredible job reading the stories. His voice is clear and steady and interesting. There are little sound effects that make the entire experience enjoyable!

Has your child ever looked at a history book and thought they couldn't read it? Perhaps the idea of reading history was boring? Well, this set of Cd's will solve that problem. Your children will enjoy learning history while riding in the car or relaxing in the house.

I played one of the Cd's while I cleaned my kitchen. We all got to listen while we did our chores. It was like sitting by the fire and listening to an old fashioned radio program. We loved it!

A Mile in His Shoes Movie - Giveaway

Movie - A Mile in His Shoes DVD - (Christian Film)

Rating - PG

Running Time - 89 mins.

This inspiring movie stars Dean Cain, as Arthur Murphy - a coach of a baseball team. In his travels, he stumbles on a rural farm and meets a young man (Mickey) with Asperger's syndrome. He is kind-hearted, polite, dedicated to his parents and has a great pitching arm.   The coach recruits him for his team. The father has a hard time letting his son go, showing us how difficult it is for we parents to watch our children experience life, without our protection.

We see a team come together and support Mickey. But we also see the cruelty of the real world, when a jealous player causes a serious problem. 

I loved cheering for Mickey as his skills grew. The coach is an excellent example of helping each player do their best, no matter what they are going through.

This is a wholesome family movie and is based on a true story.
