When Mother is Out of Shape

Door-To-Door Bakery Salesman Talking to Suburdan California Housewife

I have been overly weary for a long time. It would take me hours to do my morning housework and then I'd need an afternoon nap. This has been happening for two reasons - lack of exercise and choosing to eat unhealthy foods. The last time I was on track was during my December fitness challenge. I am also the co-creator of Fit Mommy which started a couple of years ago, and is still going on with another hostess (Annie Kate).

Even though I know how important proper eating and working-out is to all of us, I have only managed to exercise three times in the last couple of months. It has become a serious problem. This makes Mother out of shape. She cannot tend to her regular duties. She becomes chronically ill.  She is on the fast track to a grave.

My tea bag the other morning said these wise words, "Middle age is when it takes longer to rest than it does to get tired." But this all has to do with lack of activity!

The Lord chastens us in many ways to keep us on the straight path.  Sometimes we have daily struggles, constant thorns, or occasional trials. This is all for our own good. Exercise and eating right, to me, is like a thorn when I don't do it, but a joy when I do. It is just like obeying the commandments. When you do them, you are happy. When you don't, you suffer but you don't want to change.

I think our problem, in this society, has to do with the idea of self-gratification, ease, looking for pleasure, personal happiness and having everything now. We are taught to strive to live for ourselves. This can seriously affect us in many ways, especially when it comes to a lack of fitness and proper nutrition; because most of us don't want any part of that kind of discipline.

Our ancestor Mothers worked extremely hard in their daily tasks in the home and on the farm. They earned their bread.  Generally speaking, they were far more fit than mothers of today.   They were also spiritually fit.   They had family prayers and Bible reading because it was a duty. They would never neglect it because they didn't feel like it.

This is my problem. . . Because of my lack of seeking good health, I have slacked in many other things, including reading  my Bible.  These daily duties are good for me, like the chastening and disciplining of the saints.   But, my nature of seeking ease and turning to all kinds of recreations make it so that there is no time for what is right.

Whether I feel like it or not, I must do what is holy and good so that I stay on the right path in all areas of life.

Practically speaking, I am more motivated to do these things when I have good music. This morning I listened to Roy Acuff sing "Life's Railway To Heaven." I dearly wish I knew how to use an MP3 player so I could download sermons and old time gospel music to listen to while I do my workouts and go about the cleaning of my house.

If only, at this very moment, I was not out of shape in so many different ways. . . but today, I will make every effort to get back on the right path, in bible reading, in prayer as well as with fitness.

Blessings
Mrs. White

Final Fitness Report

The Legacy of Home

This is the last of four posts from our Fitness Kick-off project. I have joined with 9 other bloggers to share progress and activities on staying fit (or getting fit) before the New Year.

[I will post winners of the giveaways later today.]

Here is my Fitness Report:

Monday morning - 30 minute workout. (Included target toning with light weights)  A short time after this, I had severe physical problems (trouble walking, shaking, etc.) and had to rest.

I was not able to exercise for the rest of the week.  I realize I was worn out by the holidays. We had a lot of company. It is exhausting having guests!  But completely worth it!

I have enjoyed a long rest these past several days and will get back to exercising next week.  It is important to accept limitations when seeking to get (or stay) fit.  Sometimes we need time off.

I was still active, however. I did plenty of housework and a few errands. But I also slept a lot and just rested all week.

Push - Ups -

I did want to update you on my goal concerning push - ups. I was reading the archives here and found something from January of this year (almost a year ago.) My goal was to do 10 real push- ups. I am happy to report, I am still doing 10 and am very happy about it.

* My ongoing fitness goal is to workout daily and to replace snacks with more nourishing foods. I don't have any weight to lose, but at my age, I need to keep an eye on it so it doesn't creep up!

* Remember, we all have different health struggles and approaches to fitness and nutrition. I would love to hear what you are doing to stay fit! Please share in the comments section and then visit the other bloggers to cheer them on!

Great News!

Would you like ongoing encouragement in 2012 for your own fitness goals? You are cordially invited over to Tea Time with Annie Kate who runs our Fit Mommy Friday program!  She is inspiring, encouraging and will host check-ins, each week, throughout the year.

Thank you so much for following along on our month long fitness challenge!  Please check-out our team's final reports:

Fitness Report and McDonald's - Be Our Guest - Food Giveaway

The Legacy of Home

This is the third of four posts from our Fitness Kick-off project. I have joined with 9 other bloggers to share progress and activities on staying fit (or getting fit) before the New Year.

I also have a great giveaway to offer you, from McDonald's restaurant,  and will tell you about it in just a few minutes.

Here is my Fitness Report:

Monday morning - 30 minute workout. (Included target toning with light weights)

Monday evening - had an accident. Slammed my foot into a chair in the dark and caused some painful damage.

Tuesday - exhausted. But planned to do some  light exercises on the floor. I never did get around to it. Decided to rest my foot instead.

Wednesday - foot still bruised and a little swollen, but much better. Took a trip into the city and walked all over the place. Ran upstairs instead of taking elevators, ran through rainy parking lots. Had lots of energy. Did good.

Thursday - brisk walking during errands. No specific exercises.

Friday - (today). I woke up too late to exercise. But will do a few light target toning exercises later. Foot it still damaged but pain is almost gone.

* My ongoing fitness goal is to workout daily and to replace snacks with more nourishing foods. I don't have any weight to lose, but at my age, I need to keep an eye on it so it doesn't creep up!

Now for the Giveaway!

I love the Ronald McDonald House Charity. My oldest son and I stayed in one, several years ago, when he was undergoing medical care. It was a tremendous comfort and a lovely place.

Every time we go to a McDonald's restaurant drive-through, we see a slot to donate to their charity. It makes it easy and convenient to help.  What they are doing is amazing!  The home we stayed in was beautiful and the volunteers were so helpful and friendly.

I realize we don't commonly think of McDonald's as a healthy place to eat. But the reality is that families today are often on-the-go, and going to the drive through has become normal.  We can make good food choices and also make sure we are eating balanced, nutritious meals at home.

I have a nice prize package to offer you, from McDonald's. It includes 15 "Be Our Guest" food cards for free items:

5 - free Asian Salads.
5 - free Fruit and Maple Oatmeals.
5 - free Egg McMuffins.

Would you like a chance to win this "Be Our Guest" package from McDonald's? I have one package available for a giveaway.  One winner will receive all 15 cards.  All you have to do is leave me a comment.

Fitness Team and 60 Day Slim Down DVD - Giveaway

The Legacy of Home

This is the second of four posts from our Fitness Kick-off project. I have joined with 9 other bloggers to share progress and activities on staying fit (or getting fit) before the New Year.

I also have a great giveaway to offer you, and will tell you about it in just a few minutes.

On Monday, I visited the Moms into Fitness site to access her 4 free trial workouts.  These are free to anyone!  All I had to do was answer a few questions to get a customized workout plan. The questions included things like - my age, my fitness level, my weight and height.  The free workouts come with a pdf calendar plan, which is one of my favorite things about founder, Lindsay Brins' programs.

Fitness Team Report and - Lilla Rose Giveaway

The Legacy of Home

This is the first of four posts from our Fitness Kick-off project. I have joined with 9 other bloggers to share progress and activities on staying fit (or getting fit) before the New Year.

I also have a great giveaway to offer you, and will tell you about it in just a few minutes.

Here is my Fitness Report:

Each morning,  I worked out for 30 minutes.  This included target toning with light weights.

On Monday, I started a notebook to keep track of my exercising and eating. I made the mistake of forgetting to eat breakfast and ended up feeling like I was starving until lunch time.  Sometimes I get so busy, I forget to eat.   Looking over my food diary, I realized I ate some snacks but only ate one meal.  Not good!

I did much better on Tuesday, but then Wednesday, I completely forgot to eat a real meal the entire day. I had been surviving on little, junky snacks (like a few chips), rather than eating small scheduled meals (like an apple with oatmeal, etc.). Writing in the food diary helped me see what I was doing.  I do have to explain here that my health difficulties (former cancer patient) make it difficult for me to eat regular foods and in regular amounts. I rarely eat what I make for my family.  And when I do eat, it is a very tiny portion.

My ongoing fitness goal is to workout daily and to replace snacks with more nourishing foods. I don't have any weight to lose, but at my age, I need to keep an eye on it so it doesn't creep up!

Remember, we all have different health struggles and approaches to fitness and nutrition. I would love to hear what you are doing to stay fit! Please share in the comments section and then visit the other bloggers to cheer them on!

Designer Walking Cane

Product - Adjustable, Aluminum Walking Cane

Price - $32.00

Company - Fashionable Canes and Walking Sticks

I've often wished I had a cane. I have those days when I cannot walk without assistance. I've fallen into walls, fallen down the stairs and struggled to keep my balance. Many times I've cried while holding onto someone else simply because I felt helpless that I couldn't walk alone. Those are the bad days.

Most of the time, I am healthy and feeling fine. I can even exercise and have no trouble walking and even running! But when the bad days come, I would either lean on someone else, or use crutches for extra support.

Last year, my mother bought her first cane. I was so impressed, I wanted one too. Now you may think that is strange, since I look young. My kids even tease me and say, "Mom, stop pretending you need a cane!" The fact is, there are many adults who need the extra support. But canes are often boring to look at. That's why I was thrilled to see fancy canes that look like they are used by royalty!

I now have a beautiful, elegant cane. The design is called Moonlit Floral, with a Derby Handle. It is lovely!

I use this on my bad days. I can walk around the house, the property and even in public with the extra support I need. The design is eye-catching.  When I walk with my new cane, I feel like I can hold my head up and keep my dignity.

The tag that came with my cane says it is from "The Royal Cane Collection." It also says their canes "are designed with a sense of style and quality that makes them the finest walking canes in the world."

Welcome to day 4 of my open house party! Boy this is getting to be exhausting! All this fun has worn me out!  It's a good thing we are discussing health and fitness for today's post.

I have a great giveaway from Tropical Traditions. Then I will share the Link-Up so you can submit your posts on health related topics. Ready?

The Giveaway

Product - Antioxidant Natural Greens 13.7 oz powdered drink mix. (Mint Flavor)

Company - Tropical Traditions.

Price - $38.99

This powdered supplement mixes very easily with water. It dissolves quickly and has a strong mint taste. You could also mix it up in a smoothie to weaken the flavor - try adding it to a strawberry/ blueberry mixture with a little ice cream and you won't even notice the healthy boost you are getting from natural greens!

Here is a little information from the company:

"Antioxidant Omega 3 Greens contains a variety of high ORAC value whole foods, providing you with optimal levels of antioxidants that would be difficult to get on your own. Antioxidant Omega 3 Greens also contains 2600mg of Organic Flax & Organic Flax Lignans per serving, rich in ALA Omega 3 fatty acids."

Would you like a chance to win a canister of Antioxidant Omega 3 Greens (mint flavor)? I have one available for a giveaway. All you have to do is leave me a comment.
