The Gentle Society of Home

Startling News

In the rush of daily activities, sometimes we forget how calm and gentle home life can be.  There are certain things we can do to help us remember. . .

- We can have special touches in our favorite rooms. This may be a living room, entryway, or dining room.  Little touches of soothing artwork (like pretty flowers, landscapes, English gardens, or elegant families from the "Victorian" or "Romantic" eras.)   Nice, quiet background music of classical or gospel would be lovely and soothing.

- What we wear, and how we look.  There is something I call "Casual Elegance."  This is whatever makes you feel dressed up, yet comfortable.  For me, that is my blue cotton skirt (knee-length), a pretty top and a nice sweater.  (All from either J.C. Penny or Macy's - purchased at their annual winter clearance sale, for very little money.)  We can also have a classically, elegant hairstyle.  This may be a loose updo, or whatever brings out an aura of old fashioned sweetness to the look.

- Setting a neat table for evening refreshments, and turning on a dim lamp will calm one's nerves, if one remembers to forget the outside world for a time. (This means not to talk about it, or worry about it, for a little while!)

- Being quiet. . . (smiles). . . We often talk too much, worry too much, think too much, and want to multitask every minute away!  Being quiet and content takes effort, but it will bring peace and gentleness to the family.

Every day, we can take little steps of progress to cultivate a gentle society in the home.   We must use our creativity and be the light of our homes.  This may mean it is always our own ideas, and our own labor that makes this happen.  But this is a beautiful, noble work. . . to bring gentleness to a home.

Lilla Rose Giveaway

Etched Tiger Lily Amethyst

Lilla Rose offers lovely hair clips and accessories.   These help provide an elegant look for Mothers and Daughters.

I have a great offer for you today. Jennifer, a Consultant, is sponsoring a giveaway for my readers. The winner will receive one certificate, redeemable for a flexi-clip, or any Lilla Rose item of the winner's choice, valued up to $15. (Open to those in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.)

Jennifer, a homeschooling Mother of three, blogs at A Glimpse of Our Life. She and her daughters  have a great time working together in this business. They love the products and find the flexi to be comfortable, and a wonderful alternative to pony tails.

A Little Info about the Flexi Clips:

1. Works on all hair types (from baby-fine to super-thick).
2. Takes a few seconds to fix the hair in a beautiful way.
3. Comes in a variety of sizes, from very small (mini) to very large (mega).
4. The company has sizing and styling videos which will help you decide the correct size for your hair type, and also give you a fabulous variety of hair styles. [Watching the sizing video is highly recommended because it helps you understand which size flexi is right for you.]

The package I received included a small brochure with step-by-step hair style ideas. I tried a few of these with my new flexi-clip and loved the results!  It was very easy and fast!

Necklaces

Scrollwork Heart Necklace from Lilla Rose

Lilla Rose also has a pretty selection of necklaces. Jennifer sent me an Etched Lily Necklace to match my flexi clip.  These are both very pretty!

Fitness Team Report and - Lilla Rose Giveaway

The Legacy of Home

This is the first of four posts from our Fitness Kick-off project. I have joined with 9 other bloggers to share progress and activities on staying fit (or getting fit) before the New Year.

I also have a great giveaway to offer you, and will tell you about it in just a few minutes.

Here is my Fitness Report:

Each morning,  I worked out for 30 minutes.  This included target toning with light weights.

On Monday, I started a notebook to keep track of my exercising and eating. I made the mistake of forgetting to eat breakfast and ended up feeling like I was starving until lunch time.  Sometimes I get so busy, I forget to eat.   Looking over my food diary, I realized I ate some snacks but only ate one meal.  Not good!

I did much better on Tuesday, but then Wednesday, I completely forgot to eat a real meal the entire day. I had been surviving on little, junky snacks (like a few chips), rather than eating small scheduled meals (like an apple with oatmeal, etc.). Writing in the food diary helped me see what I was doing.  I do have to explain here that my health difficulties (former cancer patient) make it difficult for me to eat regular foods and in regular amounts. I rarely eat what I make for my family.  And when I do eat, it is a very tiny portion.

My ongoing fitness goal is to workout daily and to replace snacks with more nourishing foods. I don't have any weight to lose, but at my age, I need to keep an eye on it so it doesn't creep up!

Remember, we all have different health struggles and approaches to fitness and nutrition. I would love to hear what you are doing to stay fit! Please share in the comments section and then visit the other bloggers to cheer them on!

Mother's Dress

Jackie Kennedy, Wife of Sen, Cutting Out Newspaper Clippings Next to Open Scrapbook

Okay.. I admit it... I was a little envious while watching television. I saw this great family,  and they had nice, new clothes all the time. While I know it is not real life, I had a twinge of yearning for a trip to the local shopping mall. I wanted a purse full of hundreds to buy a sparkling new wardrobe. Not just for me, of course, but for my entire family. (smiles)

It took me a few hours to get over this horrid feeling. . . I remembered that in the 1800's, a normal mother had only one good dress. Mother would wear this to church, or on the rare trip to town. It was her best dress.

Then I thought of my own mother. During her childhood, the custom was to have three articles of each kind of clothing. She had three dresses, three pairs of socks. . etc. etc. The saying went like this:

- One in the Drawer.
- One on your Back.
- And one in the Wash.

Yet people still managed to look nice! Can you imagine not having new clothes all the time? I know, I know. . . I am spoiled beyond belief.

I think the only way I am going to cure this envy, is to get all dressed up today, complete with pearls and heels, and go about my day.  Maybe I will even take a trip to town.

Blessings
Mrs. White
