A Genteel Christmas Gathering

The Morning Walk

I have been up since early this morning, preparing for a Christmas gathering. The rest of my children will be coming home tomorrow.  We live in a rural area in Northern Vermont and the snowy landscape is lovely. There is a quietness at our Estate that is like a retreat.  The children are coming home from the city.  They are coming back to the old homestead for a happy time of eating and visiting.

Lately I cannot keep up with the messes my family makes. I have full charge of the care of my 15 month old grandbaby, along with my regular housekeeping duties.  Sometimes the men in our house are helpful with the cooking and cleaning but they don't "love" the house the way a Mother does.   My two boys, at 16 and 21 are "The Uncles" to grandbaby.  They help me with his care.  I am weary and slow-stepped.

I have a great many plans for today to prepare for tomorrow's gathering. I want to bake and cook.  I want to make special treats for the children to take back home with them.  Things like homemade fudge, sugar cookies and muffins will go into little tins for them.   But I will do this in a very slow and steady way.  I turned on an old sermon on my kitchen Radio by the late Evangelist, Dr. John R. Rice.  It is "The Christian and His Bible."  This is such a tremendous source of Spiritual nourishment, it makes the work in the kitchen a joy to the heart.

Soon baby will be awake and my focus will shift almost entirely to his care. He will play in his highchair while I make batters and doughs.  We will sing together and see all the snow out the parlour window.  Then one of the Uncles will take him out to play before his afternoon nap.  There will be times of quiet and times of hustle, as we prepare for a happy Christmas gathering.

Yet, I know that nothing will make this family time wonderful without a loving, humble attitude.  Whether all gets done or not, is not the goal. It is the process of creating and of homemaking that will bring delight to our home. It is the happy smile and the effort that counts.  It is the thought and the love that will make it all worthwhile.

I may, at times, be in the midst of cleaning a mess, or burning one batch of cookies, as I go along, but the sweet kindness that I spread, like rainbows in the middle of rain, is what will cheer the hearts of all.

Blessings
Mrs. White

Crowned with Silver

In the 1990's and early 2000's, we homemakers were greatly encouraged by an old fashioned magazine called, "Crowned with Silver."   Each issue taught us the history of feminism and how it was destroying modern homes.  It was gently, and sweetly done and a blessing to learn.

We also read old stories from the 1800's and 1900's that inspire families - just like those old fireside readings.  We read articles about old fashioned child training and keeping our homes nice and our pantries full.

There was a small pen pal section where mothers and daughters could find like-minded friends to correspond with.

Late yesterday afternoon, I found one issue of the magazine online.  I believe it was the last issue, or close to last issue, before they ceased publication (when the editor passed away).  It is the Summer 2007 edition.   The main article is called, "My Wife Took My Job" by Mrs. Anna Neumas.  She spoke about how a husband was heartbroken because his wife had decided to divorce him.  The court gave her the children because she was earning much more money than he was.  She was very successful in her work and didn't think she needed him any more.  Mrs. Neumas went on to explain The Industrial Revolution and Women's Rights Movement, and the ungodly thinking that lured wives and mothers out of the home.  The article is excellent and will greatly encourage we homemakers who are committed to our calling at home. (I hope you are able to read this article.  I have embedded the file, of the entire issue, below.)

I dearly wish "Crowned with Silver" was still in print and could continue for many years to encourage each generation. If it was ever possible to get it back into publication, I would be proud and honored to help in any way I could.

Here is the issue I found.  Please feel welcome to share it with as many as you can.

Blessings
Mrs. White

Growing up Ziglar

Book - Growing up Ziglar by Julie Ziglar Norman

Publisher - Guideposts

Paperback, 170 pages

We've all heard of Zig Ziglar, the motivational speaker who has helped change many lives for the good.  His upbeat, positive outlook on life has inspired a nation.  His daughter Julie wrote a book about her life of repeatedly making mistakes and wrong choices.  Despite growing up in such a privileged household, Julie lived a negative, destructive life. I love how she doesn't blame her parents. She knows she made her own choices. She adores her famous father and has been there for him and helped him with his work for her entire life.

Julie's story will encourage many people for a variety of reasons:

1.   Mothers will see that no matter how hard we work as parents, our children will still make their own decisions. This encourages us tremendously!

2.  Those who have had a difficult life, like Julie, will be comforted, supported, and find hope in achieving a good future, despite a painful past.  Julie does an incredible job of describing very painful circumstances in her life. These may bring tears to your eyes, like it did to me.  But her guidance and advice through her words, will certainly bring healing to those who are suffering.

3.  Christians looking for God's will in their  life, will find instruction and hope in Julie's story.

4.  One of the most profound messages in this book is that God loves us dearly and accepts us right where we are. Julie discusses how terrible she felt after trying so hard to do right, but kept falling back into sin.  When she finally broke this cycle and understood God's incredible grace, she was able to heal. Because of this, her life began to bear fruit, and be a blessing to others.

5. Those who struggle with a difficult marriage, will be greatly encouraged by Julie's triumphant marriage testimony.

6. The loving Father, Daughter relationship of Julie and Her father is precious!

This Guideposts book would make an excellent addition to any Church library, where congregants could easily borrow a copy. It would also be wonderful for home libraries. I hope that people share copies of this with one another, or buy extra for gifts.  The message is that important!

Review - Courageous DVD

Movie - Courageous- Honor Begins at Home. (From the  Creators of "Fireproof.")

Media type - DVD, 129 Minutes.

Rating - PG - 13 (for "violence and thematic elements.")

This faith based film is outstanding!  Follow the lives of four cops, all fathers, and watch their lives change for the better as they resolve to change the direction of their families.

Each man has a serious struggle in his life. But they each meet together and learn from Scripture, on what God's wants them to do.

The story line, itself, is thrilling at times, has its heartbreaking moments, and will also teach and inspire viewers to live godly lives.  I am amazed to see such a rare gem that centers specifically on men and their Christian calling.

I want to share just a few of the things that I appreciated:

1.  A Teenage Daughter learns how to respect her father's wishes in choosing a boyfriend. I have never seen a father show such great care and commitment to her well-being. This clearly shows the modern culture our teens struggle in, and gives us a practical vision of how Dads can protect their children's hearts.

2. The exhaustion of one of the Dads, and his struggle to give up even more of his own time for the sake of his teenage son.

3. The tremendous faith one of the fathers has in trying to find a way to financially support his wife and children.

I also love the resolutions (promises) each of these men made, in writing.  These are serious guidelines they agreed to follow and live by.

Resources have been created to go along with this movie. These include:

1. Courageous: A Novelby Randy Alcorn.
This book is amazing! It is based on the movie itself, but is an expanded version with additional subplots.  I absolutely loved it!

2. The Resolution for Men and The Resolution for Women.  Both of these books have the written resolutions, along with detailed chapters on each promise. They are designed for study groups or individual use.

The Woodcarver DVD - Giveaway

Movie - The Woodcarver (Restoring Their Faith in God and in Life).

From - Faith and Family Films.

Rating - PG

Running Time - 90 Minutes.

A young rebellious teenager vandalizes the outside of a church in his community. He is acting out because of pain from his family.  He is required to make restitution by repairing the damage he caused.

One would think this teen is the main character and that the plot revolves around him, but the woodcarver is the real star, with a powerful message.  The teen begins to work with him, which infuriates his backslidden father.  The boys' parents are in the midst of a divorce and home -life has fallen apart. We also vividly see the destruction which can come from focusing heavily on seeking money at the expense of family.

This movie shows tremendous grace to the sinner. It shows the power of patience and the beauty of a life-long marriage. The example and advice from the woodcarver speaks volumes.

Raising Real Men book and Hero Tales Audio CDs - Giveaway

The Book - Raising Real Men: Surviving, Teaching and Appreciating Boys (Retail value $15.)

This incredible book was written by Hal and Melanie Young, parents of six boys and two girls. They are a much loved family in the homeschool community and have excellent advice for parents. This book is 250 pages and in paperback.  I did a review for this book in 2009 and loved it!

The Audio Cd's- (Retail value $7 for each one.)

Hal Young Reads Hero Tales, which was written by Henry Cabot Lodge and Theodore Roosevelt. There are two Cd's in this set - Part 1 and Part 2.

Hal does an incredible job reading the stories. His voice is clear and steady and interesting. There are little sound effects that make the entire experience enjoyable!

Has your child ever looked at a history book and thought they couldn't read it? Perhaps the idea of reading history was boring? Well, this set of Cd's will solve that problem. Your children will enjoy learning history while riding in the car or relaxing in the house.

I played one of the Cd's while I cleaned my kitchen. We all got to listen while we did our chores. It was like sitting by the fire and listening to an old fashioned radio program. We loved it!

The Giveaway:

There will be two prize packages:

1. One winner will receive a set of 2 audio Cd's.
2. One winner will receive a set of 2 audio Cd's and a copy of Raising Real Men.

Then Sings My Soul Book 3 - Review

Book - Then Sings My Soul Book 3: The Story of Our Songs: Drawing Strength from the Great Hymns of Our Faith

Author - Robert J. Morgan

Publisher - Thomas Nelson

Pages - 290

This is such a lovely book! The artistic quality is charming - including a peaceful cover, vintage-style pages, and it is packed with stories and songs and inspiration!

Robert describes the history of music in worship. He explains the beauty of singing the psalms, the stories behind old hymns and their writers, and describes the emergence of new songs by new generations. He really brought to light for me how important the writers of worship song and hymns are to our lives!

Personally I own several hymn books and read and sing from them often. But Robert's book gives me a history behind the music.  He talks about:

- Biblical Hymns
- Ancient Hymns
- Medieval Hymns
- German Hymns
- English Hymns
- Gospel Songs and American Hymns
- Contemporary Praise and Worship Music.

He clearly shows that, through the years, the music has weaved a story of our faith. He traces time- periods and events, like in Martin Luther's day (and his song "A Mighty Fortress is our God"), about what was going on when a song came from that era.

Here are a couple of examples:

" 'Bringing in the Sheaves' was composed by the 'Singing Evangelist,' Knowles Shaw, who was later to perish in a train wreck in Texas."(page 51)

" Civilla Durfee Martin, an evangelist's wife, wrote "His Eye is On The Sparrow" after she and her husband stayed with an infirmed couple in New York, who told her that the secret of their optimism was remembering that 'His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.' "  (page 51)

You'll also find several of the hymns, with notes, so you can play and sing them yourself.  The stories and descriptions in this book are fascinating and would make an excellent devotional book for family reading time.

7 Money Rules for Life - Review

Book - 7 Money Rules for Life®: How to Take Control of Your Financial Future by Mary Hunt.

Publisher - Revell

Pages - 194

Price - $12.23

Author, Mary Hunt, is well-known for her financial help, from a Christian perspective. In this book, she shares her own story of struggling with a mountain of debt, a problem with spending, and how she climbed out of it all, and got victory.

She also shares the 7 rules that helped her. She wants you to have the knowledge to  manage your money successfully.

Many people have lost their homes by foreclosures and are facing bankruptcy. Lenders have given out risky loans to families who, seeking the American dream, did not have the tools or knowledge to make the right choices.  Mary wants you to know the facts about money.

Chapter topics:

1. "The Cost of Financial Ignorance."
2. "My Story."
3. "Financial Intelligence Will Improve your Life."
4. "Rule 1: Spend Less than you Earn."
5. "Rule 2: Save for the Future."
6.  "Rule 3:  Give some Away."
7. "Rule 4: Anticipate Your Irregular Expenses."
8. "Rule 5: Tell Your Money Where to Go."
9. "Rule 6: Manage your Credit."
10. "Rule 7: Borrow only What you Know you Can Repay."
11. "Getting it all Together."
12. "The Irregular Income Challenge."
13. "Drowning in Debt."
14. "Which Bills to Pay."
15. "An Invitation to Join our debt-free movement."

In "Rule 2" she says, "No matter what your situation - even if you are up to your eyeballs in credit card debt - you must have an emergency fund. Every household needs one. The very foundation of our money management plan is liquid cash, meaning that in 24 to 72 hours you could get your hands on money you have earmarked for specific emergencies."

This is so important! This past year, we had saved a few hundred dollars, specifically for an emergency.  One day, as I was driving home, my car was making terrible noises. I pulled off to the side of the road and it completely died. I had to be somewhere in a few hours, and it was urgent! My mechanic, a friend of the family, rushed to my aid and took care of it in just a couple of hours. I was grateful we had the quick cash to pay him.

Mary also has inspiring quotes at the beginning of each chapter. This one is my favorite:

"Today, there are three kinds of people: the have's, the have-not's, and the have-not-paid-for-what-they-have's." - Earl Wilson.

Overall, this is an excellent book. I plan to send copies to my grown children. A constant stream of financial education is essential for peaceful living.

Nearing Home by Billy Graham

Book - Nearing Home: Life, Faith, and Finishing Well by Billy Graham

Publisher - Thomas Nelson

Price - 11.65

When I first heard about this new book, by beloved evangelist, Billy Graham, I wanted to own it! I love everything written by this preacher and his family. I own books by his late wife, Ruth, his son Franklin and his daughters Anne and Ruth. Their entire family is inspiring.

But most of all, I was eager to read about 92 year old Billy Graham's experience with old age, and what his life is like since his dear wife, Ruth, passed away.

The book contains glimpses into his own life, memories of his family, and plenty of Biblical lessons for the reader. He talks about the retirement years, struggles with the pain of old age - both physical and emotional (loneliness, depression, feeling useless, etc.). He says he has a walker, wheelchair and cane beside his bed.

If you are young, the book will give you compassion for the elderly and inspire you to want to be more considerate and find ways to encourage them.
If you are middle age, the book will help prepare you for your own life as an elderly person. You will understand what is up ahead, and be guided towards these years by one of the greatest preachers of our time.

If you are at the age of retirement, you will be nodding with knowing smiles, while you read. You will be advised, encouraged, and guided into a more productive life - whether from a wheelchair or a sick bed.  You will find your joy and purpose again!

Overall this is an excellent book.  You will feel as if you are sitting in the author's home, near the fireplace, gleaning wisdom and encouragement. You will walk away refreshed and ready to face life with new vigor, regardless of your circumstances.

Not a Fan - by Kyle Idleman - 3 book giveaway

Book - Not a Fan: Becoming a Completely Committed Follower of Jesus

Author - Kyle Idleman

Publisher - Zondervan

Price - $14.99

I never heard of "Christian merchandise" or a "Christian bookstore" until I was married with children of my own. Growing up, there was really no such thing as bumper stickers with a message, or T-Shirts with "follow Jesus" slogans. The rise of marketing Christianity is shocking.

In "Not A Fan," Kyle reaches out to the generation where being a Christian is popular, complete with material goods, and all the right words.  This has a tendency to Mask regeneration and a truly committed life to Scripture.

As I read, I felt like a neutral observer, not realizing what has been happening in Christian culture.   I was so impressed with this book, I even folded several pages for later reference.

The chapters include:

1. D.T.R (Define the Relationship).
2. A Decision or a Commitment?
3. Knowledge about him or intimacy with him?
4. One of many or your one and only?
5. Following Jesus or following the rules?
6. Self-improved or spirit-empowered.
7. The relationship details.
8. Anyone - an open invitation.
9. Come after me - a passionate pursuit.
10. Deny - a total surrender
11. Take up your cross daily - an everyday death.
12. Wherever. What about there?
13. Whenever. What about now?
14. Whatever. What about that?

Kyle explains each concept with personal and cultural stories. This makes each point clear and straightforward.   You'll also find several brief "not a fan" stories by various people. Overall, this is an enlightening, inspiring book.

Thomas Kinkade's Christmas Lodge - DVD Movie Giveaway

MovieChristmas Lodge

Price - $9.99

Rating - G

This gently paced movie centers around Mary and her family.  Her family has fond memories of The Christmas Lodge where they all spent many holidays.  Mary works in the city and takes a trip back to the country. She stumbles upon the old Lodge, now in need of repairs.  Her grandfather is very ill and encourages everyone to help get the Lodge back in working condition. It means everything to them. Through it all, Mary finds a sweet love in the owner of the Lodge. This man is doing his best to carry on his family's lodge and is grateful for the help and re-newed friendship he finds in Mary's family.

The movie is a little slow in the beginning, compared to Hollywood films, but as I continued to watch, I realized the slow aspect of the plot was really calming and drew me in so much better than I could have imagined.   I absolutely loved how the family would pray before meals! Their faith in God is a normal part of their lives, and was refreshing to watch.

This Christian Movie has it's heartwarming moments that help strengthen the viewer's faith. You'll also find a nice free bonus in the DVD Case - a limited edition painting - this is a  4" x 6" print depicting the beautiful Christmas Lodge.

Overall, the movie is suitable for all ages. It is a great family movie and worth watching more than once.

The Grace Card Movie - DVD - Giveaway

Movie (DVD) - The Grace Card  (Christian Film)

Rating - PG - 13

This action packed movie is fascinating.  I love that it has a strong Christian message. I also love that Louis Gossett, Jr. is one of the actors!

The story starts with a tragic accident that causes bitterness and pain in the father, Mac. He is a police officer and sees crime and suffering on a daily basis. He is bitter and judgemental, but there is a heart somewhere inside him.  His interaction with his wife and teenage son is hard to watch, but very common in today's homes. Many can relate to the sacrifices parents make for their children, which seem to go unnoticed and unappreciated. How this all plays out in Officer Mac's life is encouraging and inspiring. The People and events which were brought into his life, can happen to any of us. It gave me hope, as I watched, seeing grace and long-suffering in action.  I was absolutely delighted with how his fellow officer (and partner) handled him, prayed for him, and never gave up, no matter how much he wanted to.  I was also inspired by the many Christian people, in his everyday life, who helped bring healing to Mac and his family.

The film has a strong message to help alleviate racial prejudices.  This came through so clearly, that I could see it working in many kinds of relationships - neighbors, co-workers and even family members.

Overall, it is an excellent film, which made me cry repeatedly. I highly recommend it for older teens and adults.

Inspiration for Home Life

Valley of the River Beck

I was reading the autobiography of Patricia St. John. A portion of the book is a tribute to her father. She described the beauty of a Christian Home. Some of what she said about her father:

"He never spoke a discourteous word about anybody and we never heard an impatient or unloving word between him and our mother."

"He encouraged us to enjoy ourselves and he loved to give us treats; but we knew he denied himself and kept his body under strict discipline; and the positive, radiant holiness that went on its own way, seldom criticizing or scolding, was extraordinarily constructive and controlling."

"So we grew up and he watched and waited never trying to force upon us the spiritual riches he had stored up for us until we were ready."

"He emphasized the importance of example, quoting John Bunyan's words, 'I was very careful to give my children no occasion to blame, lest they should not be willing to go on pilgrimage.' "

Patricia was a dedicated missionary, who wrote several books. I delight in reading about her adventures, her wisdom and the miracles she witnessed throughout her life. I am inspired by her victories, despite times of misery all around her. Surely her parents were a tremendous influence who helped her, by their living testimonies, become who she was.

Praying for Your Future Husband - Giveaway

Book - Praying for Your Future Husband.

Authors - Robin Jones Gunn and Tricia Goyer

Publisher - Multnomah

Paperback, 207 pages

Teenage girls of today need some guidance in finding a husband. They also need to learn to pray for him to be a man of God. They need to start caring about him before they even meet him.

This book includes inspiring devotions with true stories from the authors' own lives, as well as stories gathered from others.

A few things that stood out for me:

1. A boy from youth group told a girl he loved her, without even knowing her. This caused a frenzy of emotions but was not true love. The authors do an excellent job describing this common situation, and how girls can evaluate and understand how to approach godly relationships.

2. Many girls write a "list" of what they are looking for in a husband. These can be long, hopeful, and even picky! The authors share a completely different kind of list - a Biblical list of qualities that are more important than anything else. I love the way these ideas are presented!

3. I appreciate hearing Robin and Tricia's personal stories in each chapter. They really help the messages come alive.

4. Both Robin and Tricia are well-known writers of Christian Fiction.  I respect both authors and believe they have taken their gift of crafting stories and created an enjoyable work of non-fiction that will touch the hearts of many teens. This book is sure to become a must-have classic in the Christian genre!

Each chapter ends with a prayer, a section to jot down thoughts, and several discussion questions that would work perfectly in a small group study.
